Editor's Note
Keeping it light today.

This is the Founder Mailbag.

Same format: short questions, straight answers, no bs.

Also, these are a new set of questions. We are not repeating what we covered in the last mailbag.

If you read till the end, I’ve have an announcement for the Merchant’s Edition Podcast. We have already recorded several episodes and found some amazing apps that sponsored us.

Let’s go.

Founder’s Mailbag

7 questions Shopify app founders asked me last month

Hello Founders,

Founder Mailbag: 7 new questions Shopify app founders asked this month

  1. “How should I research keywords for my Shopify app listing?”
    - Two reliable sources are App Store search suggestions and competitor titles, but the real improvement comes from organizing keywords by intent:

  • Category intent: what merchants search when ready to install

  • Problem intent: what merchants search for when they feel pain

  • Feature intent: what merchants search for when comparing

Pick one category keyword for your title, then support it with 2–3 problem keywords in the first two lines and screenshot headings. Test changes in 14-day cycles to see what actually increases impressions and installs.

  1. “What’s the fastest way to get my first 10 installs?”
    - Do not start broad. Pick one niche and one use case. Then do a small batch of warm outreach:

  • Stores using a competitor in your category

  • Stores in your niche with the right stack maturity

Keep your ask simple: one question, one outcome, one next step. The goal is not a demo. The goal is the first install and feedback loop.

  1. “How do I stop merchants from churning silently after install?”
    - Silent churn usually means one of these:

  • they never reached the first win

  • they didn’t believe it was working

  • they got busy and forgot

Fix it with a simple Day 0 to Day 7 follow-through:

  • Day 0: confirm setup and show the verification step

  • Day 1: one reminder, one action

  • Day 3: show a small improvement they can make

  • Day 7: ask what blocked them and offer help

    Short messages. One action each.

  1. “How do I price my app without killing activation?”
    - Do not force pricing decisions before value is visible. Merchants will leave.
    Instead:

  • show value first

  • introduce pricing only after the first win

  • keep plan differences simple and outcome-based

If pricing is confusing, conversion drops and churn rises. Clarity beats clever pricing.

  1. “What should I put in my App Store screenshots to increase installs?”
    - Most founders treat screenshots like a feature gallery. Merchants treat them like a decision tool.

    A clean order that works:

    - The outcome in one line

    - The before vs. the after

    - How it works in 3 steps

    - The proof (result, time saved, reliability)

    - The best for (who should use this)

The heading on each screenshot matters more than the image itself. Write headings like merchant intent.

  2. “How do I handle negative reviews without making it worse?”
    - Do two things:

  • reply publicly with a calm, specific fix

  • move the real conversation to support fast

The goal is not to win an argument. The goal is to show future merchants you respond quickly and take issues seriously. Also, track the top 3 review complaints monthly. That becomes your roadmap.

  1. “I’m adding AI to my app. What’s the right way to think about it?”
    - AI should remove work, not add complexity.
The best AI features usually do one of these:

  • draft something the merchant already does manually

  • summarize what changed and what to do next

  • catch errors before they cause damage

If your AI feature needs a long explanation, it will not get used. Keep it narrow, visible, and tied to one job.

If you want your question answered next, reply to this email with:

  • Your app category

  • the one problem you’re stuck on right now

I’ll pick the best questions and include them in the next mailbag, and I will also write to you personally with a detailed response with a full execution play.

New Podcast Edition Announcement:

We are launching the Merchant’s Edition Podcast, and the 1st pod will be released in the next 2 days. I connected with these merchants multiple times before the podcast, and we discussed apps, current tech stack, growth levers, plans, and everything under the sun. So if you become our pod sponsor, I will personally bring your app multiple times during my conversations with merchants and find out ways to get more visibility.

If you want to get addon exposure and a direct link to merchants, then sponsoring this pod segment will be the best decision. Reach out to me directly to discuss the collaboration.

Till next time,
Best- Yuvraj Kewate
