Editor's Note
Reviews are one of the most interesting parts of building a Shopify app.

Everyone knows they matter.

But very few founders think deeply about why.

A strong review profile can completely change how merchants perceive an app.

A merchant searching for a solution does not only compare features.

They compare trust.

They look at:

  • rating

  • number of reviews

  • recent feedback

  • developer responses

  • whether other merchants are successfully using the product

For many apps, reviews become a growth loop:

More trust → more installs → more customers → more reviews.

But whenever something becomes an important growth lever, shortcuts appear.

That is exactly what Shopify is now addressing.

Shopify recently announced two changes around App Store reviews:

  • A dedicated policy around review incentivization

  • Stronger detection of fake and non-authentic reviews

This is not just a policy update.

It is a reminder that reviews are not a growth hack.

They are a trust signal.

And trust signals only work when merchants believe they are genuine.

Shopify App Store Reviews Are Changing

What founders need to know about the new review rules, how to protect their App Store reputation, and why the best review strategy starts with customer success

Hello Founders,

Inside Issue 33

We cover:

  • What Shopify changed around App Store reviews

  • Why review incentivization is now getting stricter enforcement

  • What founders should avoid when asking merchants for reviews

  • How Shopify is improving fake review detection

  • Why some apps may see reviews removed even without intentional violations

  • Why reviews impact App Store conversion, not just reputation

  • How to identify the right moment to ask merchants for feedback

  • How different app categories should think about review timing

  • Why negative reviews can become trust-building opportunities

  • A practical review audit checklist founders can run today

Shopify is strengthening trust in App Store reviews.

The goal is simple:

Make sure merchants can trust the reviews they use to make app decisions.

The important thing founders need to understand:

Shopify is not saying founders should stop asking for reviews.

Reviews are still one of the strongest growth assets an app can build.

The difference is:

Are you creating a customer experience worth reviewing?

Or are you trying to manufacture a rating?

Those are very different things.

A good review strategy starts much earlier than the review request.

It starts with:

  • onboarding

  • activation

  • customer success

  • support

  • product quality

The best review moment is usually not when a merchant installs your app.

It is when they think:

"This app actually helped my business."

One thing I would encourage every founder to review this week:

Your current review workflow.

Ask yourself:

  • Are we asking after merchants experience value?

  • Is our review request neutral?

  • Are we accidentally encouraging only positive reviews?

  • Are support teams following the same process?

  • Are we using reviews as product feedback?

Because the strongest apps do not chase reviews.

They create experiences worth talking about.
