Editor's Note
Every event creates the same challenge.

Within a few hours, social feeds are filled with announcement threads, screenshots, and "Top 10 updates" posts. They're useful in the moment, but they rarely answer the question that matters most to founders:

What changes because of all this?

That's the question I wanted to answer with this issue.

I spent the week after DotDev working through the sessions, developer documentation, partner write-ups, and conversations across the Shopify ecosystem. Rather than documenting every announcement, I tried to connect the patterns that emerged across the event and understand what they might mean for Shopify app founders over the next few years.

Some of these ideas will inevitably prove wrong. That's the nature of writing about platform direction. But I'd rather share a well-reasoned perspective today than wait until the answers become obvious to everyone.

If this issue helps you think differently about your product, your roadmap, or where you choose to invest your time, then it has done its job.

As always, I read every reply. If you agree, disagree, or think I've missed an important signal from DotDev, I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

The DotDev 2026 Playbook for Shopify App Founders

Beyond the announcements: what DotDev 2026 tells us about the future of Shopify apps.

Hello Founders,

DotDev 2026 is over.

Over two days, Shopify shared engineering deep dives, AI sessions, developer tooling updates, Build Awards, and a look at where the platform is heading next.

Like most people, I could have written a list of announcements.

Instead, I spent the past week reading through the sessions, developer documentation, engineering blogs, and founder discussions asking one question:

What actually changes for Shopify app founders?

Not next week.

Not after the next API release.

But over the next three to five years.

The result is Issue #36 of the Shopify App Founders Edition—a long-form playbook connecting the signals behind DotDev rather than simply listing what shipped.

Inside this issue:

  • Why AI is becoming another interface, not just another feature

  • The four platform shifts every Shopify app founder should understand

  • Why workflow depth will matter more than feature count

  • How Shopify is quietly raising the quality bar for the App Store

  • What the Build Awards reveal about Shopify's priorities

  • Where I think the Shopify ecosystem is heading over the next few years

  • What I'd do differently if I were building a Shopify app today

One idea kept coming back to me while writing this:

Individual features come and go. Platform direction lasts much longer.

That's what this issue is really about.

If you're planning your product roadmap for the next year, I hope this helps you think beyond the announcements and focus on where Shopify is heading.

What's the biggest signal you took away from DotDev 2026?

Or just as interesting...

What do you think I got wrong?

I read every reply, and many of our best newsletter topics have started from those conversations.

Till next time,
